This project was a ground floor conversion and renovation project to extend the kitchen in to the garage to create a larger open plan kitchen / living area.
In order to do this, we needed to remove the dividing wall in between the garage and kitchen and install a substantial sized steel which in turn enabled us to open up the space to its maximum potential.
As the existing garage wall was a single skin structure, it did not meet the current building regulations for an inhabited space due to its lack of thermal insulation. In most cases this would not be a problem as we would demolish the existing wall and construct a new cavity wall to meet the regulations. However, due to the existing garage already been partially built over this option would not have been financially or technically viable. So, in order to solve this issue we used a Thermaquilt which is a space saving insulation which enabled us to install timber frame stud work over it and therefore not take up any additional space.
